The Cardboard Box – Sherlock Holmes Brett Part 1 of 5
28Feb
Controversial upon its first publication in 1893, The Cardboard Box confronts some nasty consequences of adultery. Holmes and Watson link the grisly mailing of two severed human ears with a complicated love triangle. Holmes, an expert in ears, naturally, has no problem with the mystery of where they came from. But toward what end mortals pursue “this circle of misery, violence, and fear” is another question. Though still ill at the time and at the end of his Holmes career, Brett gives a focused, remarkable performance while Hardwicke lends strong support. Starring: Jeremy Brett, Edward Hardwicke, Rosalie Williams – Director: Sarah Hellings – Director: Sarah Hellings – Producer: June Wyndham-Davies

Brett is pretty good but lags behind William Gillette and Basil Rathbone.
Thanks for the post.Excellent.
Dr. Watson is the “sidekick,” who were invented for the movies and critical to most video. When talkies first came out the hero and #1 bad guy had no one to talk to and no one to give long monologs. John Wayne and Roy Rogers were not have be capable of the long interesting monolog but Gabby, Simlely Burnett and others could present lots of background and still be very interesting. The can also be used to make the hero look good.
You are right about the lines. I was watching the addition to my Granada set in which Hardwick talks about needing something for him to work with to bring Watson to life. He said he would just be starring at the wall or something if they hadn’t given some of the lines to him.
I can not watch Holmes without thinking of Brett’s acting. I watched the new one and, there are parts where Downing is being very “Brett”! Wish they could have made that picture with Brett. Oh my goodness, wouldn’t that have been a good movie!
Yes, I’d say most of the changes were made for a smooth transition from literature to film. For instance, Watson and other characters are often given some of Holmes’s lines; otherwise, he’d be doing 90 percent of the talking.
For you and others who like Holmes in print, I highly recommend Michael Hardwick’s “The Private Life of Dr. Watson” and “The Whitechapel Horrors” by Edward B. Hanna.
But no matter who writes Holmes, I hear Brett’s voice when I read them.
@FruitSack33 you were so right about this movie! It was awesome! I checked it out last night on 97 M o vi e s . C oM and was blown out by it! Thanks for the suggestion!
Who directed this movie? It was so cool! Does anyone know? My co-workers and I have a bet about who the Director was. I want to watch it again on 9 7 M o V i e s. Co M, but if anyone knows, tell me.
I am a new fan to this series and old fan of the books. I have noticed that in these episodes so minor points are changed but I can honestly say that I am not bothered by any of them once I try to understand why they did change things. One of my favorites is when Mycroft is in the Golden Pince-Nez. In the book, Holmes, I believe, drops ashes on he ground. In the series, they have Mycroft dropping snuff. At the end, Mycroft tells Homles not to tell Watson about the snuff. It was pretty good.
I see your point. The change to Christmas also allowed us to see gatherings that told us more about the sisters and their relationship with each other.
I think that by putting this story in the context of Christmas they made it more understandable that they box should be given to the sister by accident. Also, the gift to watson.
Yes it is him
IS THAT CIARAN HINDS?
Just read this one last night,
Christmas? If I recall correctly, the orginal story was set in the summer. Why the change, I wonder? Not that it hurts the story. Maybe the production couldnt wait for summer.
ive been looking for this. thanks so much for posting!
joanna david played the second mrs. de winter to jeremy brett’s max de winter in bbc production of the novel REBECCA by daphne du maurier in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s
Who was that man that kissed Sarah? I didn’t remember him in the book (or I probably forgot).
I do dare!
lol
It’s amazing!
All 3 sisters are dead ringers for Paget’s drawings. Kudos to Granada
Too bad it was Brett’s last Holmes act…RIP
quite a cast in this one. Ciaran Hinds and Joanna David have had some very prominent roles
thank u for uploading!
Been looking for this for YEARS! THANKS!
Does Sherlock Holmes have some kind of problem with Christmas? I think it’s funny he can’t think of a gift for Dr Watson!
